Rock Climbing & Abseiling

We have two rock climbing sites.  The first is in Little Killary and the other is on the base of Mweelrea. Your instructor will show you how to climb the exposed rock faces. Kitted out in harnesses and helmets and secured to the rock face by climbing ropes, your instructor will show you how to scale the cliff to the top. From here you will reach the bottom again by abseiling down. All levels can be catered for. The weather is often the factor that will dictate which site your activity session will be on and this is decided by the activity officer.

Rockclimbing & Abseiling

Why rockclimbing?

Rockclimbing is good for the mind and the body. Patience and perseverence is needed as much as strength and agility. At Killary we are lucky to have some very intrepid climbers among our staff and they are more than happy to share their enthusiasm and skills with you. This activity involves both climbing and abseiling on cliffs and rock faces. Making your way to the top of the rock face using the natural hand and foot holds you see above you requires judgement and planning - there is no marked route! Then at the top you will prepare to abseil to the bottom again, controlling the speed of your own descent. Obviously you are at all times on safety ropes operated by one of our experienced instructors.

Why Killary?

Surrounded by the rugged mountains of southwest Mayo and northwest Galway, Killary Adventure Centre could not be better placed to take advantage of the diversity of crags they offer. From the beginner climber making their first ascent to the more experienced climber improving their lead climbs, our instructing team can bring you to the most accessible and spectacular locations. Whether it is Little Killary Harbour or the base of Mweelrea, Connaught's highest mountain, the scenery and the natural advantages of the area for climbing are undeniable.

 What do you need?

All equipment is provided and detailed instructions and demonstrations will be given by the Killary instructors to allow you to begin or to improve. We do recommend you check the list of recommended clothing but it is especially important to bring raingear and to wear thin-soled, close-fitting runners if you have them.

How do you book?

A rockclimbing session lasts for 3 hours and transport to and from the crag is provided (this may be via sea or land!).
