Kayaking is one of our most popular activities here at Killary. We have a range of boats to suit all levels of ability and to ensure each person enjoys their experience. Kayaking as a sport is becoming hugely popular with all ages. If you are thinking of joining a kayak club, participating in an adventure race or investing in your own personal equipment Killary can introduce you to the sport with little expense. What is involved:Whether you want a more relaxed, fun session splashing around in the sheltered waters of Killary Fjord or if you are more interested in exploring the coastline of Connemara our skilled instructors can adapt the activity to your needs. Your kayaking instructor will offer you a choice of a relaxing paddle through unique scenery or perhaps challenge you to swap kayaks with others without getting wet! Just a 10 minute paddle from the shore will bring you to Seal Island where a family of seals will tolerate you quietly paddling among them while they bask in the (occasional!) sunshine. Killary Fjord is Ireland's only fjord and with its magnificent steep, rugged sides and stunning views, this is an exceptional way to see it all.
Equipment:At Killary we have 2 types of kayaks, sea kayaks and sit-on-top kayaks. The sea kayak is a small one-man boat with an enclosed cockpit that, using a double-sided paddle, can be taken out to explore the clean deep waters of the Killary Fjord. The sit-on-top kayaks are as the name suggests and do not have an enclosed cockpit. They are ideal for the more relaxed or beginner kayaker. You will be provided with full wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet so all you will need to bring are your swimsuit and old shoes to wear in the water. You will find more information on what to bring for any of our activities in our Essential Information section of the website.
Who is kayaking suitable for:While you do not have to be a strong swimmer to participate in a Killary kayaking session we do recommend that you feel comfortable in the water as you may be out of your depth during the session. Anyone of 8 years and older can take part and kayaking is ideal for individuals, groups or families. Whether you want to learn new skills or improve those you already have we can adapt the session to meet your requirements.
Booking and further information:For further information or to make a booking for kayaking or any of our other activities please contact us on 095 43411 or email adventure@killary.com. Kayaking can be done on its own for a 3 hour session or can be done in combination with gorge walking in a 3 hour session for the same price.
