Schools Turf Challenge

The time has come for a new level of challenge for students. The Extreme Turf Challenge, which has been purpose built on the Killary Adventure Co. grounds, is open to schools and youth groups since the 2011 season and has been very successful in the past couple of years.

"One of the best 2 hours of my life" - Student from Colaiste Chraobh Abhann, Wicklow.

As we have 3 different routes, of varying degrees of difficulty, ALL students can participate. This challenge is open to all schools at no extra cost! It offers the chance to compete against schools from all over Ireland. No special skills are needed to compete - just enthusiasm, an open mind, teamwork and a willingness to get dirty!

What is involved?

The Extreme Turf Challenge brings together a course that will be challenging both mentally and physically for students but will also bring with it a great sense of achievement and so much fun! Teams will complete a purpose-built course, under the supervision of a Killary instructor, that can involve anything from completing the Elvis Dangles, taking on the Turfinator, finding their way through Heartbreak Hill and taking the Leap of Faith. These challenges will involve competitors running through bog, climbing over walls, through tunnels, jumping into the Atlantic Ocean and much much more!!

Routes

There are 3 routes available for groups to choose from depending on their fitness. The main differences between the 3 routes is the distance covered and the difficulty of the obstacles involved:

  1. Route A - This is the hardest route and will require all members of the group to have a decent level of fitness.  These team members should be active in sports on a weekly basis such as football/rugby/hockey etc.
  2. Route B - Teams taking on this route should be of a medium level of fitness.
  3. Route C - This route is the easy route for those students looking for a softer challenge.

Each group must include 10 students, although there is no limit on the number of groups a school can enter into each category e.g. a school can enter all teams into the C route. Each team will have to choose the route they wish to do before they arrive at the centre for their stay. Each team will be timed and the results put up on a league table available on the Killary website from the start of the school season. There will be a league table per route, so groups will only be racing against those who completed the same route e.g. teams who completed route A in one table, route B in the second table and so on... This league table will be updated weekly.

Prizes & Results

At the end of May 2012 we will announce the winning teams from each table. Each team member will receive a voucher for the value of an activity day at Killary to be redeemed during the 2012 summer camps. Winners can come for just the day or if they wish to come for the week long summer camp the voucher can be off-set against the overall summer camp cost.

Equipment Needed

Each person competing in the Extreme Turf Challenge will be provided with a wetsuit. However each person will also have to bring an old, light, long sleeved top and long trousers to be worn over their wetsuit. It is important that these are lightweight, as they will get wet and very mucky. Heavy material will weigh you down, and most importantly slow you down, so it will affect your team's overall time!! It is also important that these clothes are old, as the Connemara bog will not come out easily, and the clothing may snag on branches etc along the course.
