The Course

2 COURSES STARTING ON JANUARY 8th 2007

Course 1
12 week course + 1 week to south of France or Spain practicing new skills + 4 weeks work experience.

Course 2
12 week course + 6 weeks in Venezuela practicing new skills + 4 weeks work experience.

Work Experience
One of the most valuable tools you will take with you from the course in order to get you started in the outdoor industry.

By the time you leave our course you will have actual instructor qualifications which will entitle you to instruct any where in the world.

Free Second Chance
If you fail to achieve the qualifications in the time allocated then we will bring you back free of charge (flights not included) and give you a second chance to train and sit your exams.

Why Killary?

Killary Adventure was one of Ireland's first Adventure Centres. It was the creation of Jamie Young, a well known Irish explorer and his wife Mary. In its 22 years it has become one of the largest and most respected centres for adventure in Ireland.

First-Aid Course

Essential if you want to work as an instructor, our programme includes first-aid training. This is a two-day course that will keep you covered for 2 years.

You will receive your first aid cert.

Soft Skills

There is more to becoming an instructor then learning the physical skills. Instructing is all about communication with many diverse groups or individuals. This section of the course covers issues such as:

It is one thing to become talented at a sport but being able to pass that knowledge on to someone else is a real skill. We will help you with well known teaching methods the best way to ensure you will be able to pass on what you have learnt at Killary. The course is also about self-development. You will find yourselves in situations you have only dreamt of before and we will show you how to harness these experiences to enhance you as an individual.

2006 Gap Year & Instructors Course

Killary Adventure Co. is now offering 17 week long courses for those of you who have just left school or feel like you need a break from your career. The course includes options to travel to France, Spain or Venezuela. Read on and see what Killary Adventure Company has to offer those of you who have an interest in pursuing a career in the outdoors.

Accommodation

Our gap year and instructors courses include accommodation in Killary at our K2 centre.Included in the price is full board at Killary Adventure in our purpose built K2 accommodation. You will be staying in the K2 guest rooms. They are all ensuite with under floor heating (four to a room). You will have food that caters to all needs or special diets.

Travel to France on the Killary Gap Year Instructors courseTravel to France or Spain

On Course 1, the 13th week consists of an all inclusive (flights included) Travel to Spain on the Killary Gap Year Instructors coursetrip to South of France or Spain. A real adventure during the course. You and your instructors will be heading off to tackle some of the magnificent rivers and mountains in France or Spain to practice your new found skills in a new environment.

Travel to Venezuela

Travel to Venezeula on the Killary Gap Year Instructors courseOn Course 2, there will be a 6 week trip (all inclusive with flights) to Venezuela in South America. Venezuela is a country of extraordinary diversity and natural beauty where the sun shines most days of the year. The country abounds with a fusion of heavenly tropical beaches, snow-capped mountains, steaming pristine jungle and a vast mysterious savannah.

Angel Falls in VenezuelaIn the North there’s over 3,000 km of Caribbean coast where coconut palms grace white-sandy beaches and a myriad of deserted islands dot the horizon. The snow-capped peaks of the Andes rise above 5000m in the west and drop down into endless wildlife-filled central savannah, which drains into the eighth longest river, the Orinoco and home to the ancient Warao Indians. In the South, steamy Amazonian jungles, haven to a abundance of exotic plants and animals. Also the Gran Sabana plateau, a beautiful expanse, ‘the lost world’, with its unique table-topped mountains, where cascades the world's highest waterfall, Angel Falls. At 979 m, Angel Falls are 19 times taller than the Niagara Falls, or 3 times taller than the Empire State Building. You could be spending 6 weeks here developing your skills learned on the Killary Gap year course.

Kayaking

Chris Keeley has been instructing on training courses for the Irish governmental training organisation (FAS) course for many years. He has paddled extensively in France, Spain and the Italian Alps. Your Kayaking will start off slow and easy, practicing your basic strokes on the calm sheltered waters of the Killary fiord. You will be surprised to learn that by the end of the 10 week course you will be confident enough to be surfing your Kayak on the Atlantic beaches and racing down the white waters of Irelands Rivers.

You will reach Kayak Level 2 Instructor training Canoe (Kayak) safety test.

Rock Climbing

Clare Wheatley is one of Killary's most experienced Rock Climbing instructors. She has climbed al over Ireland, New Zealand, France and Spain. Your first session will be spent on our purpose built Rock Tower where you can get a feel for the quite physical act of Rock Climbing. After the initial session Chris will drive you in our 7.5m RIB across the fjord to the base of Connaught's highest mountain, the impressive Mweelrea. Over the next 10 weeks he will install a confidence in you where you will be happily leading your own climbs up Ireland's many varied cliffs and crags.

You will reach your SPA training.

Powerboat Course

Killary boasts an impressive list of Powerboats. Our 7.5-m RIB with a 200 Horse Power engine is a real beast! There is little to beat the feeling of pushing the throttle forward and traveling of speeds up to 60 Knots (70 miles per hour) down the Killary Fjord.

We also have a modified 100 hp RIB to assist in teaching water-skiing and wakeboarding which you will learn to handle with confidence. Our rescue boat is a Zodiac inflatable with a 50hp engine, ideal for small journeys or teaching sailing or windsurfing.

You will reach your National Power Boat Certificate (level 2).

High Ropes

Closely linked with your Rock-Climbing training, you will receive in-house training on Killary's High Ropes course. Although most High Rope Training tends to be site specific the skills are easily transferable and it will be a real asset to have on your CV. High Ropes Course are becoming one of the most popular activities in Adventure Centres all around the world.

You will receive your site specific cert.

Archery

Archery is one of the staple activities of most adventure centres. Although perhaps not as adrenalin filled as some of the other activities it nevertheless boasts great skill and precision. Killary's top of the range bows and targets will provide you with the skills needed to quickly reach Archery Instructor.

You will reach the level of archery Instructor.
