Hill Walking & Mountain Skills Courses at Killary
Hillwalking is an accessible, challenging and healthy activity, with a wide appeal. Ireland has a wealth of hillwalking areas, with rolling hills in Wicklow, Remote summits of Donegal and the rugged and challenging Magillycuddy reeks of Kerry. Galway and Mayo sport some of the best hillwalking areas in the country in particular the Twelve Bens, Maum turks and Mweelrea mountains, as well as spectacular coastal walks around Killary harbour and Achill Island.
Location - Killary Adventure Centre, is within easy reach of all the main walking areas, with options to explore straightforward coastal walks to more challenging hill and mountain terrain.
COURSE: Introduction to Hill walking – ‘Getting Started’ - (2 Days)
This weekend gives you the chance to try Hillwalking for the first time, with an aim to introduce you to the challenge and reward of hillwalking. The course will be tailored to the ability and needs of the group, and will be a combination of guiding and skill sessions, to give an all round grounding to hillwalking.
Our local hillwalking is regarded as some of the best in Ireland, including Mweelrea, Connaught's highest mountain, the challenging Maumturk ridges and the popular Twelve Bens, in Connemara's National Park.
A Qualified Mountain Leader will deliver this course.

Moving on from our Introduction to hillwalking, or for those with previous experience, this course will cover skills to gear you towards becoming a self-sufficient Hillwalker. The Mountain skills programme, is approved by the Irish Mountain Leader Training Board, and can be run as either an official course, or as a basis for more specific skills training.
Mountain skills is run as two courses over four days, covering Navigation, Equipment, Mountain Hazard awareness, Steep Ground training, and Emergency procedures. There is also the mountain skills Test, which over two days covers all areas of the syllabus and provides a formal assessment of personal skills. This test is also a pre-requisite for those wishing to enter mountain Leader training.

Previous Experience - Reasonable level of fitness, and some previous walking experience.
